Focus Feature: Building Awareness of Recycled Paper Magazines Co-op America’s PAPER Project and Next Steps Marketing, have teamed up with major bookstores throughout the U.S. to build awareness of magazines that publish using recycled paper through the “Green Paper for People and Planet” program. The mission of the PAPER Project is to “work for a paper production system that keeps communities healthy and safe, and helps ensure that the bounty of the Earth is preserved for all generations to come”. Currently, 85 magazines are members of The PAPER Project’s Responsible Magazine Network. This is the only network of environmentally responsible magazine publishers in the U.S. The “Green Paper for People and Planet” program demonstrates that magazines are committed to the environment in a time where environmental issues are at the forefront. For the participating magazines, it can mean building awareness for their titles, increased sale and market penetration. More importantly it shows that there are magazines in our industry that are embracing recycled paper. Hastings is the first bookstore chain to participate in this program by offering free premium placement to 6 member magazines; Shape, Fast Company, Mother Jones, ReadyMade, Nick Mag, and Body + Soul. This premium placement will be a Gondola Endcap for the month of November in all their 153 stores. Special signage will build awareness of the magazines to highlight that they all use recycled paper. This week Barnes and Noble (B&N) committed to offering discounted space and special signage within their stores for this campaign. The first promotion in B&N will be in January, in 240 of their top selling stores. This promotion will be available to 10 magazines. This promotion will roll out in a greater capacity in April in conjunction with Earth Day. Both Hastings and B&N have demonstrated their commitment to the environment and to these type of publications. Please visit www.MagazinePAPER.org for more information on the PAPER Project or contact me directly at 415.773.2044 if you are interested in participating in the upcoming B&N promotions. |
