Focus Feature: Newsstand News The first quarter of 2008 has resulted in many new developments regarding the push for greater efficiency in the newsstand distribution industry. Wholesaler- The three largest magazine distributors in the US market have refocused their energy on becoming more efficient, with the hope that this will lead to greater profitability. Sourceinterlink plans to cut 40 million magazine copies to reach overall efficiency of 45% for all titles. Anderson News and The News Group continue to make unspecified cuts to increase efficiency. These companies hope that the cuts will not affect single copy sales. Low priced check-out titles as well as underperforming titles will experience the biggest cuts.
Retailer- Wal-Mart, a key retailer to many publishers, recently delisted 1,400 titles from their authorized list, cutting their list by 56%. 1,100 titles now remain on the list. Wal-Mart accounts for 20% of all magazine retail sales in the US. CVS also announced their intention to increase efficiency to 45% by April 1st. These developments will mean a substantial print order cuts for many titles.
