Industry News
Anderson News and Source Interlink are introducing a mandatory 7 cent fee per copy distributed, effective February 1st. Anderson states "If publishers do not agree to this new fee they will be refused distribution." Currently, all major national distributors are in negotiations with Anderson and Source Interlink to find resolution to this matter.
Single copy sales slipped 8% in the third quarter of 2008, from 266 million to 224 million, according to MagNet.
Postal rate increase is expected to be 4% in May 2009. Build this new rate into your budget.
As many of you know the USPS has instituted a new Flat Sequencing System. The purpose of the system is to standardize flat mail (magazines are considered flats). This means that your addressing requirements will change. This will impact you most if you have tip-ons or coverwraps in your subscription promotions. New Beginnings: Tips For Success
Newsstand:
Retailers and promotion providers are keener now more than ever to offer discounts plus provide added value to publishers. Now is the best time to take advantage of these discounts. In addition, it might prove to be a good time to test, but do remember that overall retail sales are down.
|
Online:
Use online cover testing to find out what images and features work best with your audience. This process also ensures connection and interactivity with your readers who are eager to share demographic information, ideas for content and design, preferences and buying habits. NSM offers this service. Contact Máire Walsh for more information.
|
Subscription:
If you haven't added email renewal and billing to your series, now is the time to do it. You won't be able to do away with your print efforts but it's a great opportunity to decrease expense or add incremental response. Not sure your audience is the type? Start with subscribers who came to you through your site. They've already shown an affinity for doing business online.
|
Digital Editions:
Video is very effective at engaging your readers and drawing them into your digital edition. consider adding a welcome video to your magazine. |
