Allensworth, founded by Colonel Allen Allensworth at the turn of the 20th century, is the first funded, founded, and governed African American town in California, and is on the Amtrak San Joaquins train line. To better serve low-income communities, we sought and applied for a grant to cover the cost of travel and a food voucher for mostly African Americans in the Bay Area, Bakersfield and Fresno to discover Allensworth. The trip was part of the discovery as we created teaching collateral for kids and adults, which brought to life other forgotten African American California events and places along the Oakland to Central Valley, the backbone of California Amtrak San Joaquins line.
